How does proper raw material storage improve AAC block quality?

How is the silo size calculated for an AAC block plant?

Silo size for each raw material in an AAC plant is calculated from: (1) plant daily consumption of that material in the AAC batch recipe, multiplied by (2) the target buffer duration in days. For a 300 CBM/day plant with a standard fly ash + lime + cement + gypsum recipe, daily consumption is approximately: fly ash slurry 180–220 tonnes, cement 15–20 tonnes, quicklime 25–35 tonnes, gypsum 8–12 tonnes. The fly ash storage requirement (large volume, low density) is typically handled with a covered open yard rather than a sealed silo, unless the client prefers enclosed storage.

Why does quicklime need a special silo versus a standard cement silo?

Quicklime (calcium oxide, CaO) is significantly more hygroscopic than cement — it absorbs atmospheric moisture rapidly and converts to calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) on contact with humidity. Even modest moisture absorption reduces lime reactivity and changes the AAC batch chemistry, causing density variation and block quality problems. A quicklime silo must be airtight with pressure-equalisation vents that prevent ambient air from entering the silo headspace during material discharge.
